On Saturday, October 21, as part of our Feral Cat Week Celebration, we are getting together to build feral cat huts. Okay, it doesn't sound glamorous - but it is SO important. Without these huts outdoor cats are exposed to freezing temperatures and literally freeze to death if they don't find somewhere to go. These huts are made from unwanted regular and/or styrofoam coolers - the same thing that keeps your beverages and food cool in the summer - - keeps cats warm in the winter by retaining their body heat and shielding them from the cold weather elements. We have spay/neutered a lot of outdoor cats this year - and none have had feral huts - there are 11 off of North Ave who need them, another 4 in Stratford, countless in Bridgeport, etc, etc. It's just too cold for them to survive against the elements.
This event is two fold:
1) we need coolers! We have launched a collection campaign. Any unwanted coolers may be dropped off at the Westport Petco, 1850 Post Road East, Westport, in the donation bin near the front door. If we are able to, we will even pick them up. People get A LOT of steaks and other food items delivered in coolers - so please ask around :)
2) On Saturday, October 21, we will gather to make the huts. Everything we need will be supplied - just come wearing clothes you don't mind potentially getting a little dirty. If it's nice weather - we'll be outside...if it's not - we'll be inside Petco - so this is a rain or shine event! :)
Thank you very, very much!
