This is a group of folks who is willing to be contacted and asked for help on a last minute basis. Whereas don't aim for this (last minute) - animals aren't on the schedule we are and we sometimes have to shuttle them to a vet's, pick them up and take them to/from Petco where our adoption cubbies are located, a last minute cancellation by another volunteer for our Fetch progam/cat caretaking/etc.

TAILS has four cubbies for cats/kittens available for adoption at the Petco next to Walmart and Staples on Main Avenue in Norwalk. We are responsible for feeding, cleaning and playing with these kittens in order to maintain their health and well being until their forever home comes and finds them. This project is once a week as per our Cat Caretaking calendar, or can be more or less frequently. Orientation is required (lasts about 30-45 mins) - once that is complete you are able to start. Typically it takes about one hour to take are of the cats/kittens for a shift.

This volunteer opportunity is critical to the happiness and health of our kitties at Petco in Westport. Each day we need volunteers to go play with and socialize our adoptable cats and kittens who live at Petco-Westport. Additionally, we ask that water/food is checked and the kitty cubby be cleaned during the visit. We greatly appreciate all help! An orientation is required for this opportunity (check our online calendar at www.tailsct.org (left side) to sign up for the next orientation).

As it implies, dog fostering involves fostering a puppy or dog in one's home to get it out of a cage and into a home environment. We don't normally handle dog adoptions so having the need for a dog fosterer is not common.

We take in and sell/consign/eBay donated items as part of our FETCH program. It is a great way to take unwanted items and turn them into animal life saving dollars. From a few boxes of unwanted gifts to full houses and apartments - we use our extended cargo van and volunteer manpower to "fetch" the items from people's homes. It's fun to see what "treasures" are incoming and if you have an eye for items of value or want to help us while getting a little exercise - we could really use your help!

You would be fostering a TAILS cat or kitten(s) - or both. This enables the animal the opportunity to be in a safe, home environment while getting socialization. We get a tremendous number of cat/kittens through our spay/neuter activities who we would love to help, but cannot without foster homes. We also need to give our kitties available for adoption at Petco some respite from being in the store if they have not been adopted in a 2-3 week timeframe. Duration of fostering can last a week or two to longer.

We anticipate having roughly 10-15 kitties available for adoption as well as a small crafts table - so busy day planned! We could use help with set up (tables, crates, bedding, etc) and helping during the day to monitor kitties (make sure they don't get out), generally talk to people and, of course, help at the crafts table, entertain the cats. We will start set up at about 10:15am - the event starts at 11am, sharp but interested people will start showing up earlier than that normally. The event ends at/about 3pm but we will be a "man down" because yours truly (Dorrie) thought it would be a great idea to schedule a volunteer orientation at the exact time the event ends (3pm) -- so we could use some help with take down especially. Casual attire for sure, come ready to find some kitties their forever homes just in time for the holidays!

TEAM TAILS is our walk/run fundraising team (a la Team in Training's team but on a much smaller scale). Help is needed organizing this walk/run fundraising team - organizing, soliciting for members, posting information and (if interested) participation. Team members walk or run a short distance in a local race and get pledges/make a donation for their participation. It's also a great outreach event.
